Robert Kubica, long admired, long denied his rightful place in racing history, finally stood tallest. No one in the paddock begrudged him the win. He had earned it. And the crowd knew. Better still I was almost the only one with the yellow Ferrari polo shirt!
Le Mans is more than a race. It’s a pilgrimage. The scale of it is impossible to capture fully—the deep throb of engines vibrating through your chest, the stink of rubber and champagne, the thunderous applause of the grandstand swelling into the night. There’s something primal about it. The headlights slicing through darkness, the pit crews working in an endless ballet of precision, and the way the soundscape never fully stops, it just changes rhythm, from the scream of acceleration to the hush of a 3am lull, broken only by an engine echoing through the forest.
And then… Mahler. As the cars rolled to the line, the second movement of his Resurrection Symphony played over the speakers, an unexpected, almost indecently beautiful thing.
