The Time I Broke a Spatula (August 10, 2026)
There's a particular kind of quiet that settles in when you step away from something you love. Not a bad quiet. Just a pause. For the last couple of years, life asked me to press pause on this work, and I did. But lately I've felt that familiar pull, the one that says: it's time to come back.
So here I am. Starting again.
People sometimes assume this work is one thing. It isn't. When I think back on it, what I remember most isn't anything you'd expect. I remember walking through a park with a woman in her sixties who had, in her own words, lost a sense of who she was. We didn't do anything dramatic. We just walked, and talked, and by the end of it she was standing a little taller. That afternoon has stayed with me more than almost anything.
I remember two weddings. Different couples, different families, the same lovely chaos of seating plans and speeches and someone's uncle on the dance floor. Being someone's easy, uncomplicated company on a day like that is a strange privilege, and I loved it both times.
And yes, I remember the spatula. A young man came to me wanting a bit of discipline, and let's just say I committed to the role with rather more enthusiasm than the kitchenware could withstand. It did not survive. He, on the other hand, left a happy man, lighter than when he arrived and grinning about it. Some losses are worth it.
Then there are the women I've had the pleasure of meeting, each of them wanting something a little different, all of them wanting to feel that someone was genuinely paying attention.
That's the thread through all of it, really. People don't come to me for a script. They come to feel seen, at ease, and looked after, however that looks for them. Making someone's happiness actually happen, in whatever shape it takes, is the part I missed most.
