The Truth Seeker (December 8, 2020)
I had a really interesting conversation with my yoga teacher the other day (I do my sessions online). We were talking about identity and knowing who you are (emotionally, in your body, spiritually etc), and she said, “You’re a truth seeker.” I thought, ‘Wow, yes, I didn’t know there was a name for it.’ I felt very naive not knowing this term. Being a truth seeker and, especially, a truth speaker is how I get into trouble.
I then read up on the term and read that truth seekers not only seek truth through words, but also actions, reactions, intuitions and emotions - actions speak louder than words after all. It is a constant searching, self-reflecting and rediscovering of one’s realities. And to bring this back to the topic that started the conversation: one can only find oneself once they have faced their own truth.
A couple of points that stood out to me in my reading were that our society, including our education system, doesn’t encourage truth-seeking, but rather obedience and rule conformation. I was a teacher a long time ago. I hated school when I was a child (it was so monotonous - learning facts rote to pass tests), so I wanted to rework that experience and bring some creativity to it. Again, I realised my naivety, as this optimism was met with an overpowering system; a factory churning out test scores. There was no time for creativity and free thinking. And that’s ultimately why I left.
Now I have space and time to think and feel and be creative. I have time to seek out the truth and explore different realities. To walk in the park, to experience nature, to build meaningful connections, to explore for pleasure and make mistakes. Nevertheless, I do often end up in the teacher role, so there must be something teacher-y about me.
